What is nestable packaging?
Packaging shaped so empties take a fraction of the space fulls do.
Nestable packaging is designed so that empty units sit inside each other. It is a direct answer to the fact that most rigid packaging is efficient in one direction only.
Nesting and collapsing
Nesting relies on shape — a taper or a step. Collapsing relies on folds or a knock-down structure. Both shrink the empty; nesting usually costs less handling time, collapsing usually saves more volume.
Where the saving actually appears
- Return freight, when empties travel
- Warehouse and yard space at both ends of the loop
- Inbound freight on the empties you buy, before they are ever filled
- Handling time, because fewer trips are needed to move the same number of empties
When it does not pay
If empties are consumed on site and never travel, or if volumes are small, the geometry is not worth optimising. Nesting earns its keep where empties are numerous or move distance.

- How much space empties occupy today
- Whether staff and equipment can separate nested units easily
