Why are some drums tapered?
The taper is not styling. It is what lets empty drums nest instead of shipping air.
A taper lets one empty drum sit inside another. That is the whole point: it attacks the cost of the empty container rather than the cost of the full one.
The problem the taper solves
Most rigid containers are efficient exactly once — on the way out, full. On the way back they occupy the same cube while carrying nothing. For anyone running a return loop, that empty leg is where the economics break down.
What a taper costs you
- Slightly less internal volume for the same external footprint than a straight-sided drum
- A shape that some automated lines and handling equipment were not set up for
- Care when unstacking, because nested empties can wedge if they are stacked wet or damaged
Other ways to the same result
Collapsible containers fold instead of nesting. Flexible formats such as bulk bags and liners in a reusable outer take the empty-volume problem away almost entirely. The right answer depends on what has to touch the product and who handles the empties.

- How many empties you move or store in a typical month
- Whether your handling equipment can stack and separate nested units safely
- Whether a small loss of internal volume matters against the space gained
