FIBC vs. Gaylord
Two ways to move a pallet of dry material, with different handling and different empties.
FIBC bulk bag
Woven bag with lifting loops
Gaylord bulk box
Corrugated box on a pallet footprint
Side by side
| FIBC bulk bag | Gaylord bulk box | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Powders, granules, resins, aggregates | Parts, regrind, granules, general dry material |
| Relative capacity | Pallet-scale, shaped by the bag and the load | Pallet footprint, height set by the box |
| Handling | Lifted by loops from a hoist or forklift boom | Handled as a normal pallet load |
| Discharge | Spout discharge, or cut open depending on type | Tipped, scooped, or bottom-discharge styles |
| Empty volume | Folds flat; very low empty volume | Ships and stores flat before set-up |
| Reusable potential | Some types are built for multiple trips; many are single trip | Multi-wall boxes can take several trips in dry conditions |
| Material | Woven polypropylene, with liners where needed | Multi-wall corrugated, with liners where needed |
| Sanitation | Liners are common; bag reuse depends on the material carried | Liner-dependent; board is not washable |
| Common industries | Chemical, food ingredients, plastics, minerals | Manufacturing, plastics, recycling, distribution |
| Advantages | Very low empty volume; good for flowable solids | Simple pallet handling; no hoist needed |
| Limitations | Needs lifting equipment and dust and static consideration | Vulnerable to moisture and rough repeated handling |
FIBC bulk bag — When this makes sense
- The material flows and can be discharged through a spout
- A hoist or boom is available at both ends
- Empty storage and return space is tight
Gaylord bulk box — When this makes sense
- The contents are parts or irregular solids
- Only standard pallet handling is available
- The material is loaded and unloaded by hand or by tipping

Shop-floor shorthand for a pallet-sized corrugated bulk box — which means the specification matters more than the name.

TermLiner
A bag or insert placed inside a container so the container never touches the product.
