What is an IBC liner?
A bag inside the container so the container never touches the product.
An IBC liner is a fitted bag placed inside an intermediate bulk container. The product sits in the liner, not against the container wall, which protects quality, removes most of the cleaning burden and lets the same outer container carry different products.
What liners change
- Cleaning: the liner is removed, the container is not washed out
- Cross-contamination between products and batches
- Barrier: layers can be specified for oxygen, moisture or aroma
- Reuse: an outer that never touches product is far easier to put back into service
What gets specified
- Structure and layers, matched to the product and its shelf life
- Fitments for filling and discharge, and where they sit
- Whether food contact applies
- Fill temperature and whether the product is hot-filled
- Fit to the specific container, since liners are not universal
Where they matter most
Food ingredients, purees and concentrates, fine chemicals and anything where changeover cleaning is slow, expensive or a quality risk.
What to consider
- What barrier the product actually needs, not the maximum available
- Fill and discharge method
- Whether the same outer container will carry multiple products
- Disposal route for the used liner
